Hi,

Is there a way to get some sort of X10/Insteon smoke detector working? I read something about using a smoke detector that has a relay & then using a X10 door sensor to trigger it. Im not exactly sure how to do that or if thats a good solution.

Thanks,
Rich

Are you trying to trigger an X10 security Console? You could use a relay in place of the magnetic switch on a Security Door Window Sensor.

If you just want an X10 signal sent you could trigger an X10 PF284 Powerflash module.

If you want an Insteon signal. Simplehomenet has a few modules with Inputs. Some have both Inputs and Outputs.

Do you have existing smoke detectors now? If so you can replace only one of them to get contact closure if any of your existing ones alarm.

Check out THIS thread for further info.

Also, I did see an Insteon smoke detector a few CES's ago. Check out THIS thread for a pic.

BSR; Yes I also remember seeing the picture. Guess it never made it to market or Smarthome isn't pushing it. Though many where asking for such a device.

You can get RF wireless UL listed smoke detectors. GE Security is one manufacturer.

I do not know of any X10 smoke detectors that has passed UL testing. Transmit and pray does not work for fire!!!!

Do the wired smoke detectors all have a relay?
If you mean the one I mentioned, just the one you replace will have a relay, but that relay will close when that, or any of the other smoke detectors go off.

If you must know WHICH smoke detector went off with your system, you can replace them all with another model and each will have its own relay.

I opted to just replace one because I just wanted to know: FIRE: YES, NO scenario. There are advantages of having zone detection such as knowing that there REALLY is a fire (multiple messages sent).

Sorry, I meant what brand/model smoke detectors have a relay in them? I would like to use a DS10A in a similar fashion to the watersensors. When the sensor gets wet, the DS10A goes to alert mode (then programming takes over). I would like to find a particular smoke detector that has a relay (& I can attach the DS10A to the smoke detector).

I just dont know if every wired smoke detector has a relay or if its just specific brands.

Any ideas on what to get?

Thanks,
Rich
