Can the XEP and its firmware kick out email alerts, such as so and so home? Or is a seperate component required.

Yes, You can write rules to trigger a pre-defined email message, however there is a limit of 16 predefined messages.

And you cant use variables so each message is "hard coded" and they get eaten up quickly

Also, I have seen advert for RMS, but that looks client side? What software runs on server?

Elk RMS (or Elk RM, Elk Products seems to be confused about the name themselves) is touch screen software which runs on the client. It connects directly to the Elk M1 using the M1 XEP ethernet interface. Just keep in mind that the software isn't free, and the designer is fairly expensive, so you can't customize without spending more money.
