Usually an update to HomeSeer is done with an exe file. So you would download it, take it with you and just run it.

The way HS 1.x installs a plugin is it downloads the plugin, unzips it, and then installs it. If you make a backup of the homeseer/updates directory, you will have a copy of all the plugins you have installed. It keeps both the initial zip file and a copy of each of the unzipped files.

I don't have much to add to the discussion, but I do remember there is a way to install files usng the updater program but already having the files on your computer. I used it quite a bit when I was testing the install file for some of the things I have in the updater.

I tested Control Think with the same controller that I use with HS. When my USB controller "disappeared", neither HS or CT could see it. I have to reboot my computer for CT or HS to see it again. So you can put me in the blame the controller camp.
