1-Wire Questions

I Have been wanting to create a 1-wire network for a while now, but have never gotten around to buying any hardware. Everything I have seen available as far as the USB interface and wiring has been using RJ-11 or RJ-45. But yesterday I saw this on Ebay:

I really like the simplicity of how I could just plug and unplug new sensors to the network, but since it is pretty different from everything else I have seen that is available, I am a little skeptical. Is anyone familiar with creating a 1-wire network like this with stereo cables?

It really doesnt matter the type of wire you use (per se), as long as you have all the proper connections.

That is pretty much what I was assuming. I guess the main difference is the USB adapter.

Using stereo cables like that, you'll only have data, gnd, 5v. That's fine for temp sensors and some other devices. If you want to use some of the Hobby Boards stuff, like the barometer, humidity, relay boards, etc, you'll need to add a power injector for each device or use standard cabling for it.

Dallas Semi, in one of the app notes, recommended using a linear bus with devices hanging off it for best results. A star/tree bus, where the signal is split multiple times, is NOT recommenced, although a lot of people do it and seem to have success with it.

That's a good price and the stereo cable should work OK for short distances but it will probably not be too reliable over longer distances.
