2nd keypad for garage

Today I received my 2nd keypad. This one is for the garage. My garage door is connected to my panel and the back door also in the garage is connected to my keypad. So far so good, my issue is when looking at the keypad manual I noticed that a 2nd keypad need to be connected to the elk-m1XIN. I don't have that piece. Does this mean I can't connect this 2nd keypad to my panel with the extender?

The diagram is an example intended to show how the termination resistors are configured. The words are the important part. The data bus connection section in the ELK M1G installation manual provides some additional options.

:hesaid:

The keypad is just another databus device - as long as you have a basic understanding of how the RS485 bus works, there's nothing to it. Basically speaking, there is intended to be a single direction for the data to flow with a termination at the end; that's why for home-run data bus runs, an extra pair is used to bring the signal back and keep looping it through.

IIRC, you were using the DBHR, in which case you'd either have a dedicated run of 4 wires for this keypad, or it'd be daisy-chained behind another; with the termination happening at the last device on that run.

Where did you see that? The XIN is an input expander for adding more zones which runs on the databus. You should take another look at that manual.

:hesaid: Look over your manual and documents again.

They are not a step by step "how to" instruction of how the system works or needs to be connected. They provide typical connections and overviews.

I connected the keypad the same way as my first keypad. Trying to enroll but for some reason my keypads are now unresponsive. If I unplug the garage one I can use the main one once again. I know the first one is given address 1 automatically but Im not able to give address 2 to my second. Any idea why both keypad become unusable when I connect the 2nd one.

As soon as the 2nd keypad is connected the main keypad and the 2nd keypad become non operational and dot respond to the keys selected. The main keypad just starts beeping non stop. Did anybody ever have this issue?

Does the second keypad power up? What is the key sequence you are using to change the address of the second keypad? Are you pressing these keys on the second keypad? Ignore the main keypad for now.

Your data bus configuration is probably wrong, but let's get the address changed first.

The keypad does power up but I am not able to select any keys from the keypad to try to set the Address. When I do the bus Enrollement from the main keypad it tells me communication failed. Ok so if we are only talking about the 2nd keypad any idea why it doesn't allow me to use the keys on it?

Why dont you just disconnec the first keypad while you are trying to enroll the second one. That way there will be no address conflicts on the network.

Make sure you have the correct wiring and check your terminations as well. The last device on teh network needs the termination, so if the second keypad is daisychained from teh first, then the terminator on the first needs to be removed and put on the second.

What does "not able to select any keys" mean? Do you get a shock? Are the keys stuck?

There is only one key that you need to worry about at this moment! Do you know what it is? Tell us.

My keypads are not daisy chained. I have a termination on both. If I remove my first keypad I believe my second keypad will Automatically get set for keypad 1 since the system will only detect 1 keypad and does this automatically. Not sure what this option will solve.

When I say I cant use the keys from the keypad it mean the keypad does respond to any selections I make including if I try to press on the ELk button.

Znelbok was asking why don't I disconnect my first keypad to enrol my second keypad that's why I said it would automatically get address one.
if you have only one keypad the m1 automatically gives it address one as per the manual.

I will Try these step again but I was mainly trying to get to the enroll bus section using the elk button

1. Hold down a key while applying power OR press and hold the (Asterisk) “ * ” and F5 keys for 5 seconds. 2. Press the F1 key, then use the UP or DOWN arrow keys to set the desired address number.
3. Press the EXIT key when done.
