3 way wiring help/ 4 button controller

I have installed a bunch of vizia dimmers, etc. Because the 4 button scene controllers do not control a load, it was suggested to replace one switch in a 3 way application with a controller. In my attempt to do that I have run into a problem. I want to replace one switch with a controller and the other switch with a dimmer. Each switch seems to be a typical three way switch with a hot wire, red wire and another black wire(travelers?). (I am obviously not an electrical expert..) Each of the switches is in a seperate three gang box. One black wire from each of the switches in the 3 gang box is bundled together and connected to a wire- I assume this is the hot wire. The other black and red wire is separate for each switch. Of those two wires, I think the black is the load (it has been in my 2 way switches) and the red? (traveler).
So, I took out one switch and put in the controller. The controller only requires a hot wire and a neutral. I wired it up and was left with two extra wires. I then put in the dimmer according to instructions (using both blacks and the red) same as I had in another 3 way application successfully when I used a dimmer and a slave.
The only way I seem to get power to both the dimmer and controller is when I wire the "extra" red and black together on the controller side of the 3 way. This gives me power to the switch and dimmer, and I can dim up and down using the dimmer. However, the dimmer behaves a bit erratically and it will not turn all the way off, only low. When I replace the dimmer with a regular switch and leave the wiring the same on the controller side (extra wires together) The switch turns the light on and off just fine and I have power to the controller.
Does anyone have an idea on what could be a solution so I can use the dimmer have it turn all the way off?

Thanks
