When I was a kid, we had a PRIVATE party line between our store and the house. Each number had a different ring. If we wanted to ring the house, we had to dial the number and hang up, wait for it to ring both phones, and then pick up again. That made it tough to use the phone for very long to talk to our girlfriends when the store was open...
But, gas was also only 37 cents a gallon and I rode my Honda mini-bike for about forty minutes to get to my girlfriend's house 9 miles away through woods, trails, and fields, over an old raised railroad bed, and down some dirt roads. It was much more fun going to her place than tying up the store phone. hehehe ;-)
