Anyone do retrofit HVAC zoning themselves?

Watching Ask This Old House the other day, they had a retrofit heating zone system that used air bladders in the ducts for zoning. I looked up the system they used, and it ran $5k plus. I have done some searching and found a place that you can get a basic kit for less than $1000. Ideally, I would want to run this off of my HAI Omni, but not sure that I could. I know I could just use Omnistats and get some basic functionality. Anyone tackle something similare themselves?

I've not implemented it yet, but I'm just going to put powered register vents in the house, then control those through my automation.

It's not as "perfect" as if I had dampers, but it's also not $1000+ for one zone. I think my total cost is going to be around $300 for the whole house (30ish registers...if I am remembering right). I also think I can get "away" with it in my house as it's a smaller home...at least based on all the manual D and J calculations that I've ran :-)

I'd be interested in knowing your source for the powered registers. I've got an older home (1947) that retrofitting dampers into would be onerous. Controllable registers might be a decent middle ground.

Hope this helps:

I bought them from Brookstone.com for about $12.99...can't seem to find them. The above link will take you to a discussion I had in regards to those. You can get them from Amazon.

Looking in the gmail account for the sales receipt...apparently I only bought 16 of them...I don't know where I got the 30 from...

Wait...I remember, that's something else I had to buy...sorry...the 30 was for the keystone jacks around the house. DUH!
