I don't care for non-verifocal my self. I have used some like this and they perform ok. It is a little difficult to get a useful picture out of it. (one that could be used to get a conviction) What area are you thinking of covering with this? (Should be alright for close in small areas. ) I have seen one application where the client set it up as a motion in a garage and just wanted it to use the alarm output from dvr to tur on lights and open doors. (Kinda cool but overkill IMHO) Outdoors if it is under adequate cover might work but my concern is weather.
I prefer to use mostly what (I think) your calling "day only" cameras. For security reasons... it is best to have lots of available lighting outside. I use lots of lights on motion sensors myself. But I also like having a big chunky IR (night) camera on a Ninja mount. The IR camera is easy for the bad guys to spot.. and that may help as a deterrent. But the motion sensor floodlights are a good deterrent also.
I use a mixture of cameras... to include IR and Dome cameras. The good thing about a dome camera is it's hard for an intruder to spot exactly where the camera is looking. I use decent (outside rated) CCD color dome cameras I bought on line for under $50. But I always mount my cameras under an eve or something to keep them protected.
I use a couple of "outdoor" dome cameras made for outdoor use. This have IR and switch from color to BW. They are still working fine after about 3 years outside. They are though starting to get a bit rusty as they are exposed to the weather. I am using Cat5 / baluns to connect them to the home. I am not sure how much I paid for them though or remember MFG. I also purchased (but didn't install) a couple of "Everfocus" outdoor dome cameras. The housings are built much better. They are not IR and have heaters in them. The weight alone of these is probably 4 times the weight of what I am currently using outside. Might install these as additional "under the eave" type camera. I am also using larger (you have to look for them) IR/bullet cams. This are also color/BW. They stay in mostly color mode because of the ambient lighting. In addition using Optex cameras. These have "weathered" the best to date being outside now for about 6 years.
