/archive/j/site/logos/verizon.jpgThings are about to shake up in the world of home automation. According to a recent article in The Suncoast News, mega-corporation Verizon is prepping to launch a home and energy monitoring service. Their business strategy is to offer 3 different plans targeted to homeowners. The first option consists of home monitoring functionality, including remote door entry and video surveillance. The second level enables home energy monitoring through the use of thermostats, wireless light and appliance controllers, and even a circuit-box mounted sensor that monitors whole-home energy usage. The third plan combines both services in a single package. Details on the user interface to monitor and control this functionality is limited, but it appears that it will be web based and so available from your PC, smartphone, and tablet. It wouldn't surprise me if they offered this as an exclusive function to Verizon Wireless subscribers. The service will cost $9.99 a month.
Interestingly, Verizon is not partnering with hardware manufacturers but instead providing their own devices. Pricing and availability for the hardware has not yet been finalized.
Bright House has also announced plans to enter into the home automation industry, though few details were released. While they plan on offering a similar home control service as Verizon, their primary market is high-end security, such as that of ADT. Pricing information and availability were not released.
Interesting times for the home automation industry. We will be following these developments as they unfold. Stay tuned.
