Attempting to obtain motion detector/alarm advice

My goal is to setup a motion detector and speaker or siren using the volume step feature of the Elk110 driver.
I am hoping to have a situation where an intruder would hear a warning at a volume level that does not disturb
the neighbors allowing the intruder a chance to leave, but increases in volume the longer he remains. Would this
type of setup be possible? Thanks

Using JUST the motion detector and siren? Or using it as part of an entire system?

The M1G already has the capability of starting low and then increasing the volume, but from your description, it sound like you are trying to do it sans alarm panel.

jlehnert, I am just a layman with no security knowledge and only have a few motion lights on my house.
I got to thinking it would be nice if I had sound along with light set off by the detector and searched for
months online to see if I could purchase something like that and had no luck. When I stumbled upon
the Elk110 driver with volume control it I wondered if this type of thing was possible. When you replied
about "sans an alarm panel" I didn't know what that meant because of my lack of security education, is
the panel like an electric breaker box for a house? I guess my question is a theoretical one and was
just trying to find out if such a motion dectector was possible. Any help would be appreciated.

Jake: No, the 'panel' being referred to is the alarm panel itself (the box where all the alarm wire go and guts (like the circuit board and battery) are) - like an Elk M1G, Ademco system, ADT or Brinks system, etc. The 110 is intended to be used with a panel like that. We need a little more information to adequately answer your question. Like...

1. Are your motion lights just those all in one motion lights from like Home Depot? Where it senses the motion and the lights come on?
If so, they can't 'easily' be used to control other things.

2. Do you have an existing alarm system of any kind with separate motion detectors? And perhaps control the lights with something like x10?
If so, then the 110 should be able to hookup to that alarm panel following the diagram in the 110.

In theory you may be able to take a 'standard' security motion detector, the 110 and a speaker and with a few other parts make it work. The motion detector would be a contact closure (like on/off) which perhaps could trip a relay which could provide the input needed to the 110. But that would be a 'homegrown' setup as the 110 is intended to be used with an existing alarm panel of some type.

Reading the forum I can see the people who contribute have an apptitude, knowledge, and fascination for electronic systems, I like so many
people have none of these qualities. This is why my idea of a simpler setup interests me. My thought is to add an additional "barrier" to
lighting by adding sound. I would like anyone creeping on my property approaching my home in the middle of the night to hear his presence
is causing alarm noise that will increse in volume if he remains in the area

Jake: Well, I admit, most of us at least have the fascination part! We can get you over the knowledge part and probably even the aptitude, but you do really have to enjoy working with this stuff to succeed. It sounds like you basically want an off the shelf device you can walk into Home Depot and buy and just go home and plug it in and be done with it. That's fine if there is such a device but I have never heard of one exactly like that. The problem is when you start trying to take parts like a PIR, Speaker and Elk110 that are not designed to work together in that exact way it becomes even harder because you have to then design or do something out of the norm. Sometimes that is even harder than having a more complex 'brain' like an Elk M1 in place. At least then you can usually pretty easily connect something and have it work without redesigning something. Does that make sense?

Anyway, the closest thing I can think of off the top of my head is an Optex PIR with built in voice warnings, like this one. I don't think it does the volume rise like you want but it may be close enough for an all-in-one simple solution?
