I hooked up the original disks to the machine and booted back into WHS. I downloaded Prime95 and let 'er rip for about an hour. Nothing happened. I realize that prime95 is mainly a CPU and memory workout though....and I'm just as concerned that it's a hard disk or controller or video issue thats causing this (if it's hardware related at all). So I did some searching for an overall system benchmark test suite, and found passmark, with their built-in test suite. So I installed that (30 day trial), and it's running now, testing cpu, network, memory, disk and video. So far...nothing has happened, which I hope I can say means that the problem isn't hardware.

So if this doesn't fail soon (because the longer it goes, the PC is more likely to lock up on its own), then I guess I'm left with it being software. I'm no stranger to the format/reinstall routine, so I'm not exactly loath to do it. The good thing is that WHS *does* allow for a backing up of sorts...mainly just of the shared folders on the drive. If you plug in an external drive (which I happen to have), it'll recognize it, and you can set it up to back up the public shared folders. And that's really all I care about, as far as losing everything. I mean....the PC backups are just there if I happen to need them, and hopefully in the time it takes for me to format and reinstall WHS, hopefully I won't need them!
