Can the Elk M1 see RA2 button presses and then trigger rules?

We chose the HAI OPII over the Elk M1 as the security/automation panel for a new house in part because posts in this forum indicate that the Elk M1 cannot see RA2 button presses (e.g., http://cocoontech.com/forums/topic/24948-elk-m1-and-lutron-radiora2-keypad-button-press/ and http://cocoontech.com/forums/topic/25535-elk-or-hai-for-lutron-ra2-integration/#entry204209). A security contractor who is a candidate to install our system and who is trying to persuade us to install the M1 instead of the OPII says he spoke to Elk and Elk advised that the M1 can trigger rules based on lighting changes.  He interprets this advice to mean that the M1 can see and act on button presses.  
 
It could be that Elk has revised the M1XSLU RA2 interface so that the M1 can now see button presses.  Or, it could be that the MI can see lights turning on or off on account of button presses, but cannot directly see the button presses, which I think would mean that the M1 cannot trigger different rules depending on which of several RA2 buttons that control a circuit is pressed.  
 
I would appreciate guidance as to whether the M1 can see RA2 button presses and trigger different rules depending which RA2 button was pressed.

I am no expert, but I couldn't figure a way for the Elk to know when I pressed or depressed a button on a keypad or a pico remote.

I could monitor the status of a light and when that light changes to a certain state trigger an event. But Elk didn't seem to know what I did to get they light to the certain state.

I tried to use phantom outputs and get clever, but I couldn't figure it out. I know either Homeseer or Charmed Quark supports monitoring button pushes, but I think the Elk can just monitor the status of loads.
