Welcome aboard, frankdr!
As a fellow IT person in my soon-to-be-past-life, I can tell you that anywhere and everywhere you're pulling a Cat5 or 6 cable for neworking, pull at least three more for "other" uses. Put some in the eaves while the ceiling is open, where you might put a motion sensor, camera, or flood light. You may have already planned this stuff, but I'm constantly hearing about guys having to run another cable for the new gizmo, or wishing people could get a line to a certain place that's no longer reachable without tearing apart walls, or too many devices cramping the 2.4GHz wireless space...
When you start into home automation, the possibilities seem to grow exponentially. Pretty soon you're adding temperature and humidity senors to every room, using the network cables to carry unintended signals, and looking for more outlets!
This board has a bunch of very helpful people, and a few crazy ones, too. They shall remain nameless, but one of them is the host! hehe Hey, it's a great bunch. Run your ideas across us, join in the evening chats, tell us what you've done.
Welcome!
