For the OP, if there's only going to be basic dabbling and security is more paramount, I'd just get a V-20P (if that's not what you already have) and add some stuff to it to do what you want to do.
I'm in a similar boat to the OP. By "V-20P" do you mean a Vista-20P? What specifically would you add to it to get it to report "with some level of detail" (OP's words)? I had written it off because I did not see any way to get reports that are more detailed than "an alarm occurred" without having to subscribe to Honeywell's Total Connect service.
