Determine DB levels on Coax Cable

Guys, I used to work for the cable company many years ago. When I worked there the techs had special meters that were able to determine the DB level for the coax cable. The DB level helped to determine how much "signal" was coming into the customer’s house and into each TV set.

I am currently experiencing problems trying to distribute the modulated signal from a few cameras around the house.

Can anyone tell me if a multimeter (voltmeter) would give some sort of information about how much "signal" or the db levels of a particular cable. I need to determine how much signal the modulator is putting out and other various devices.

Thanks,

Dave

No, you need a real signal meter to actually test for this.

Can you get a capture of the results on screen?

One that we have had people use in the past is the Channel Vision M2000 - RF/Satellite Signal Meter.

there is a rough and ready method for determining signal level using an attenuator (variable).

Add it int he line, increase the attenuation until you lose signal and that is approx the level you have at the TV.
