If you want a for sure way to run your dvr via IP then get Dish. My vip622 is controllable via IP from any web connected computer or my iphone (and I imagine other web enabled phones). I can even use my iphone as a remote to change the channels (not terribly useful except if I want to see what my kids are watching when not home and switch to something more educational). They have a deal with sling whose software controls the whole thing. I actually find that using my iphone to schedule dvr events is easier than using the on screen menu/regular remote.
