Dish Vip722 Over the Air Input + Cameras

I have a Dish Network Vip722 receiver with the over the air input. This input is used to view channels from an over the air antenna through the Dish receiver. The channels will also appear in the Dish guide.

I also have 4 cameras hooked up to a dedicated server running Bluecherrys linux based software. The Bluecherry card also has a composite out which I have going to a CE Labs 1001F modulator to distribute the quad screen view throughout the house.

I thought it would be cool if I used the over the air input to insert my cameras into the Dish guide. This does not seem to work though! I think it may be because the over the air input only accepts digital channels and the modulator is not outputting a digital signal? I don't know so I thought I would see if anyone had any input or suggestions.

Welcome to CT!

I'm pretty sure you would need a HDTV/OTA compatible modulator, which aren't cheap, and can't think of any other alternatives using that hardware.

I also want to extend a warm welcome!

Unfortunately, I don't have any other solution to your problem. I'm sure it is due to the differences between ATSC signal the box expects to see and the modulated signal it is receiveing.

Thank you for your responses and the warm welcome! I have been reading the CT forums for a while now and finally joined!

I currently have no way to view my cameras from my living room so I thought this would be a neat feature... Nothing I want to spend too much money on though.

Eventually I would like to replace the glass in a large mirror in my living room with a 2 way mirror and put a screen behind it for the cameras!

You could try an analog modulator. Then instead of having your vip 722 tune the image, let your tv tune the signal. Of course this requires that your tv has an analog tuner. There are signal merger/splitters that let you put the ota signal onto the same coax as the satelite signal so an additional wire isn't necessary. The signal modulator lets you pick a channel to put the signal on.

This one here will let you choose from a bunch of different sources and will convert to RF from line-in sources.

Thanks for your reply...

I was considering doing that but I was trying to avoid having to change the input source on the TV to view the cameras. I currently have everything going into an A/V switch and one HDMI cable and one component video cable going to the TV. Unfortunately the switch does not upconvert component to HDMI so I do have to switch sources on the TV if I want to play Wii, but that is very rare.
