The instructions say to connect to an earth ground rod 6 feet or longer driven into the ground or a copper wire cold water pipe.  It then says an acceptable but less preferred ground is the screw on an electrical outlet.

What do you guys use?  A rod driven into the ground would be VERY tough to do from this location.  How good is the screw on an electrical outlet?

Since both my Elk and electrical panel are in the basement, i ran it back to the ground bus on the panel.

How good is the protection if instead of an earth ground rod, I used the middle screw (ground) on the Elk transformer?  Does that give me good power surge protection?

If the wiring in your house is new, it should be ok. If it is older wiring, some outlets were not grounded. You could used an outlet tester to verify that that outlet is properly grounded.

Also, if your junction boxes are plastic, you will need to use ground wire inside box.

Copper pipes should be fine also.
