Elk Areas and Zones

Hi,
I have set up my Elk M1G and am getting it all squared away. I have the doors and windows to the house and then two overhead garage doors (all on one zone). I also have motion sensors throughout but we can leave those out right now. I have the following scenario I need to implement:

When I arm away I would like it to arm the doors and windows to the house but leave out the garage doors (sometimes I come home and don't go in the house but rather piddle in the garage). Similarly when I leave in the morning sometimes it takes a bit to load of the kiddos and get out the garage.

When I arm stay I would like everything armed (both house and garage). Where would I set these two modes? Do I need multiple zones? What is the silent alarm option? etc.

Thanks in advance!

Garages are always a little tricky to handle. About the only way I can think of for what you're trying to do is either by using rules to bypass the doors (which I don't care for) or by using a relay to bypass the door contacts unless you arm "stay". Some people screw with the Exit1 and Exit2 timers - they don't work for me though for the same reasons you stated.

I'd buy an Elk924 relay (it's two relays triggered from one output) and hook up to one of the onboard voltage outputs... I'd wire it so that when the relay is off the garage is bypassed; when it's on (during stay mode) the door contacts are in use. Because it's two relays you can catch both doors with one output easily.

Rules and an additional area would be the easiest I know of without any additional hardware. Pretty easy to accomplish.

Thanks to all for the replies!

How would I set up the additional areas since I only have one keypad? I don't know about a KPAS as I don't want to run the wire as it would be difficult. Thanks for your help!

I don't have the exact details but basically you'd define the garage as a separate area... it wouldn't have its own keypad - and you'd use rules in the M1 so that whenever you disarm the main area it disarms the garage too - and under certain armed conditions, it would arm the garage. All in all not a bad idea at all.
