ELK EZ8 Outputs

Hi All,

I am setting up a new M1 EZ8 for my Sister. I am using the Output #2 to drive one siren, I bought the 110 Voice Siren Driver to drive some additional speakers.

I thought I could get it to work by hooking the Burg+ wire to the output 11, and the fire+ to output 12, and then setting up these rules:

WHENEVER THE BURGLAR ALARM IN Area 1 (Area1) TURNS ON
THEN TURN Burglar Siren (Out 11) ON FOR 10 MINS, RESTART TIMER IF RUNNING

WHENEVER ANY FIRE ALARM TURNS ON
THEN TURN FIRE Siren (Out 12) ON FOR 10 MINS, RESTART TIMER IF RUNNING

WHENEVER ANY ALARM, ANY AREA CUTS OFF
THEN TURN Burglar Siren (Out 11) OFF
THEN TURN FIRE Siren (Out 12) OFF

But when I trip a zone and trigger an alram I don't get a siren. I metered the output voltage on Output 11 and I don't see it going to 12V like I would expect.

The siren driver is working, when I connect burg+ to +12V for testing I get it to sound.

What am I missing?

10mA maximum current. Maybe you're drawing too much. Those outputs are are really meant to drive an external relay or a very low current device like an LED. You may have burned them out trying to drive the siren directly.(not sure if they are current limited or not)

Check page 5 of the EZ8 manual for details.

The 110 burg+ is a voltage input so it should be drawing virtually no current - it draws +12V directly from the battery on a separate lead.

Is there an event log somewhere that I can look at to see if the status of the outputs is indeed changing?

Is there a separate supply for the 110? If there is, are the negatives of the ELk powersupply DC- and this supply commoned together?

yes -

Currently it is connected as

12+ from battery (through a 2.5 amp fuse) ----> 12V+ siren driver
output 11 M1 ----> burg+ siren driver
output 12 M1 ----> fire+ siren driver
Common (- on battery and M1) ----> neg on siren driver

I had the same issue when trying to hook up my Elk124 - even though it had its own power, for whatever reason it wouldn't trip off the outputs until I hooked it to the Elk's aux-power. Luckily it seems to work since the current requirements are low enough.

I think it has to do with the voltage reference being different - but I wasn't sure the right way to connect them to balance that out... hopefully someone on here can chime in...
