Elk/HAI and motion sensors for HA

I'm planning for a new home build. I want to include motion sensors in all walk-in closets so that the lights will turn on automatically. In fact, I want to write rules that will consider the time-of-day in order to decide the dim level.

I'm planning on using Z-Wave for my lighting so I could use Z-Wave "occupancy" sensors in the closets. If I want to use Elk or HAI for my automation controller then would I need to use hard-wired motion sensors or could I use the Z-Wave modules? Remember, these are only for home automation not for security. I'll include other motions for security.

Have you considered regular magnetic switches on the doors of the closets?

Regardless, if it is new construction, most here will rec you use hardwired sensors for security or automation purposes.

You've never met my kids. They do not know how to close closet doors [completely]. Motion/occupancy sensors would work better for my kids.

With that said, I do plan to pre-wire all interior doors for magnetic switches. But for automation I will need to go with either motion sensors or occupancy sensors. Oh, and I can pre-wire for hard wired sensors if that would work better than Z-Wave sensors.

I don't want to rain on your automation parade, but wouldn't it be easier to get this Closet Door Switch and just train the kids to close the door completely when done? And if you ever sold the home, you could leave these in place for the next owner.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best solution.
