I installed an Elk M1 Gold for a friend of mine a couple of years ago, but to date he has used it only as an alarm system and not for any automation.
I have a couple of original Smarthome PowerLinc X10 controllers (Model 1132, discontinued) and thought about giving him one of these to use for a couple of simple automation tasks, but was unsure if it would work.
The only info I've found with regards to the Elk refers to the PowerLinc II:
