elk m1g serial protocol

does anyone know how to login into the elk m1g through the serial interface though an application like hyperterminal? I realize elk rp would normally be used for this.

I should also add that you can also open a connection to the M1XEP via your network, same commands, just different APIs to use to start the connection.

If you are looking for a more secure way to log in, set up a username and password for the m1XEP. Serial port is secure due to the need for hardware access. Some RS232 commands will require a user code.

Are you trying to crack the RP code for an elk M1 that you did not buy yourself? As far as I know the APIs used by ElkRP are not publicly available, but if you are handy you can probably sniff the packets and see what it is sending if it is not encrypted. Alternatively give ELK a call and they can advise you on how to reset or have you send the panel to them. I don't believe there is a way to reset the RP code, but there is a way to reset the installer code if basic config is all you need.

You're close.. I'm trying to crack the RP access code to my unit, in my house, that I did buy myself. :D I switched laptops and lost the code with the old one. I got a serial sniffer last night, and I'll take a look at what's happening there today.

Elk told me that I can send the unit to them, but for that, I'd have to take it out of use, and I'd lose all my rules, which I REALLY don't want to do.

You may want to discuss this with ELK, if they are willing to help. I'd imagine if your code is short that it is pretty easy to break. But I suspect ELK may have put in some extra security features to stop you from brute-forcing it, or maybe the RP code is sent encrypted, etc. The worst they can do is say no.

Wow! If I were you, I'd just backup the RP account to a home server (if you have one) and memorize the RP access code (or keep your written RP access code in a secure location).
