Elk M1KPNAV: mounting speaker behind it?

Is it possible to mount a speaker behind this new LCD touch keypad? I head it is really small so I am not sure.

thanks,

I would say that with a little ingenuity anything is possible. It's not going to be a drop in install like the KP2.

OK - if I place the speaker in the 1 gang box and mount the new key pad outside - will the magnet of the speaker hurt the keypad? also, will the sound of the speaker be blocked by the keypad?

I have not much experience on this so thanks for helping out,

I did not think LCDs were susceptible to magnets. see this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ltyQtyQuz4

Old CRTs were for sure. Maybe it depends on LCDs?

Anyway, if you are installing the ELK-SP12F, i would imagine the magnet is pretty small. (I ordered it and has not yet arrived). Trick would be to allow for some spacing to let sound through otherwise it may be muffled.

Look at this:

The post above isn't necessarily the truth. Myself as an installer, I have seen issues with magnets installed too close to LCD's and especially CRT's over the years. Speaker magnets are stronger than most believe, and I believe the SP12F's are pretty strong, but not rare-earth magnet strong.

Personally, while not as "clean" looking, I'd find a different option or mounting location in proximity to the keypad(s) in question, because even remotely mounted, the SPF's are plenty loud for most installation applications.

I'd put money that, if you can make it fit right (which you could with some creativity), you'd never have a problem with it... Even with the KP2's it's completely behind the keypad and a tad muffled by it, but it works just fine. There's not a reason in the world that a small speaker like that mounted several inches behind the LCD would cause any problems.

I wouldn't have the speaker up against the back of the LCD though - I'd use a deep box and have it towards the back so there's a little spacing.

If I didn't have all my keypads set and recessed, I'd order one just to do a writeup showing how it can be done.
