Elk Navigator mounting

Reading the install manual on the Navigator, It makes a big note about using new-work boxes only.

Has anyone tried mounting it with OLD work boxes? Does it work OK? I havent purchased a Navigator yet, but wanted to know if the install is going to be a big mess or if I can get away with a new-work box instead. That would kinda be a deal breaker for me as I like avoiding as much drywall work as possible :)

Thanks.

I used a retrofit (low voltage) box and the problem is the side 'ears' of it stick out slightly from the keypad. I just painted the box's outside frame the same color as my walls and it really isn't noticeable (keep in mind these are VERY close up photos).

Of course YMMV depending on your AHJ (aka wife/significant other) :)

Looking at BSR's pics, I'm having a hard time picturing how it would look different if it was surface mounted. The pics make it look like its surface mounted, is there any other way? Does the backplate on the Navigator "sit" in the recess created by the low voltage box?

Is it possible to just install drywall anchors into the drywall and screw the backplate to them? (or is that what you mean by surface mount?)

Im also wondering exactly how far off the wall the box hangs surface mount vs "recessed".

Navigator's backplane is flat, an old work box has the ears/wings on the flange that sits over the sheetrock, so the backplane is smaller than those flanges, you'll see them and it won't be flush/flat with the plane of the wall.

Gotcha.

With that kind of setup I cant see gaining really all that much between surface mounting and mounting to a low voltage box.

The reason I used a box was because of the hole left after removing a Caddx keypad.

Yeah Im starting to think the box mounting was more intended for a retro-fit, not to make it closer/flush with the wall itself.

Surface mounting will be fine. Now just a question of if I wanna go for pretty (Navigator) or function (KP1 or KP2)

Drill a hole for the wiring, set in 2 anchors, done. No box needed.

NAV v/s KPx. Each has its benefits. Its your call.
