ELKRM on Android OS cell phone?

Does anyone know if it is possible to run ELKRM on Google’s Android OS?

Verizon is set to release Motorola’s Droid cell phone with Android OS. I’m interested in the phone but concerned I won’t be able use ELKRM. I’ve read that it’s possible to run .NET but that’s the extent of my knowledge.

Thanks,
Scott

It’s been a while so I thought I would ask again. Has anyone loaded ELKRM on the Droid cell phone? I don’t think the Android OS market is large enough for ELK to create an app so I’m will to look at other interface, HomeSeer or CQC if there is a work-around.

Thanks, Scott

It's not looking good. I have been monitoring the Android marketplace, and there is almost nothing for home automation :/

When I finally get an Elk and get everything installed, if nobody has beaten me to an ElkRM equivalent I'll take a stab at it. I have a G1 myself.

I have a homebrew solution that I can control basic functions of my ElkM1 from my Droid. That said - I haven’t moved into my new house yet and the Elk isn't fully setup so I haven’t done anything advanced with the software I wrote for the droid. You can arm/disarm it, activate outputs, and view the status of zones; it can connect via J9 or directly to the M1; that's about it at this point. I also have the ability to control my UPB lights with it (thru J9 atm) If no one else beats me to it, I'll have at least something stable to release in a couple months. The really neat thing is I tapped into the voice recognition of the phone to search for keywords, "Computer, please dim the kitchen lights to 50%" -- and it complies :D

I wonder how much demand there is for such software though -- if there’s enough interest I may take it on as a commercial endeavor rather than "I did this for myself but I'm releasing it to the public" type of thing.

I can see why the iPhone software helps sell home automation systems - controlling things from the phone, especially the voice recognition, defiantly has a huge wow factor to it.

Kent,
Keep us all posted on your progress. I’m not much help when it comes to programming but if you need someone to idiot proof your app... that would be me. I use the M1, with RSI thermostat, and UPB for lights and receptacles. Separate I have an IP camera and at some point hope link to motion sensors via M1 to turn on/off a video feed.

Thanks, Scott

For what its worth, everything I read lately about Android is that its market is growing exponentially. Just last month it added over 9000 apps (1/3 spam of course). I really think Android is here to stay and will be the only real competition to Apple in the near future.

I thought I'd throw a bone here -- these are some screenshots I grabbed from the development emulator of my software.

To my knowledge there is not an Android application for the M1. There is an opportunity for someone to write an application.

Looks awesome. You misspelled porch, though. ;)

I am looking to buy a new smartphone soon with automation in mind, and so far the droid, coupled with your application, look like the most appealing solution to me. Keep up the good work and please keep us informed of any new developments.

Doh! I write software professionally -- looks like I've gotten too used to having a QA team at my disposal. As I won't have a QA team for this project, I'd like to invite anyone who would be interested in doing a non-public preview of the software go ahead and PM me your e-mail address. It'll be a few weeks until I have something ready to go, but when that time comes I want to hit the ground running. During those few weeks I might e-mail out screenshots requesting feedback and asking for desired features. If possible, please provide a general overview of what devices are connected to your Elk. You must be comfortable with downloading and installing the development environment (Eclipse) & the Android SDK to push the package to your phone (I'll supply a guide). Those who actually help out I will provide promo codes to when the software gets released to the market.
