It's a vertical omni.

What's magic about a hi-gain vertical omni-directional antenna? Can't we just fit a bit of wire of the proper length to a connector and then attach some coax to it, like the W800/mr26 antenna mods (but with only one "prong" vs. four).

After getting unsatisfactory results with that hawking antenna I mentioned earlier, I dissected it. It looks to be just what I described above, with a plastic coating on it. - so maybe we could put some heat shrink tubing around out copper wire.... I think the thick coating on off-the-shelf antennas is more to lessen the effect of poking yourself in the eye with it than it is for performance, but I could be wrong.
