I think we need a bit more info before we can help you with this. What exactly are you trying to signal? A successfully received fax? An error message (out of paper or out of ink)? Something else?

Also, how does your fax machine currently signal whatever you're trying to detect? If you're looking to signal an error and the fax machine has an error light then you can get something to detect that error light and update homeseer... if you're looking to signal on a received fax and your fax machine doesn't inticate a successfully received fax in any way, then that's going to be a lot harder to try to get to homeseer.

the fax has a beeper signal perhaps i could tie into that somehow? or the line when it rings?

Or if you have some way of monitoring a voltage signal maybe a laser pointer and a photo transistor so when the paper is ejected it breaks the beam and sends a signal to what ever you are connecting it to .... (x10 power flash, elk, stargate, or others...)
