Good looking home automation software

I guess it depends on one's interpretation of the term "open source". I don't refer to Premise as being "open source" because, although it is free, its source-code is unavailable. FWIW, I've been using it for two years and a lack of source-code has not posed a problem.

But will the development continue? The current release is 4 yers old and it seems the project is dead.

... will the development continue?
Unlikely.

Premise was developed by Premise Systems, sold to Lantronix and then sold again to Motorola. Motorola discontinued development years ago and the product was released to the public for free. The rumour is that they bought it for its underlying technology ("SYS") and not for its use in the Home Automation market.

1) Good looking

2) Free

3) Supported

Hmmmmm. ;-)

BTW, Housebot (see my sig for a link) is not quite free, but is pretty inexpensive. Take a look.

I'm testing LinuxMCE now. It's quite powerful and is free. The design looks crappy, but there is a tool for building UI's.

Also, OpenRemote is a promising project with some serious developers involved. It's still very poor, but it promises a lot. Also, it's multi platform, which is something very rare for HA softwares.

I tough J9 is free, but it seems it it will be commercial software once the 1.0 version is released. Is there anything close to it, that is free? I'm just curious.

Didn't your dad ever tell you there is not such thing as a free lunch? You get what you pay for.

I'm just askin' ;) Commercial is good, Open Source is better ;) As a developer I prefer a multiplatform open sourced software.

Well I spent 30 years as a developer and sure it would be nice to find something that looked and worked great for free. But as someone who has been into this home automation for years and an audio enthusiast for most of my life I have to say there is no such thing. If you look at my blog you will see my setup. It is certainly one of the least expensive ways to have a multizone music system with touch screen control. There are other software packages out there also. On the home automation control side the hardware support is ever expanding and takes a lot of dedication for the developer to keep up. That means a lot of man hours. Good luck in your quest. I for one don't mind paying some to make sure there is someone dedicated to improving the product as well as someone to answer technical questions when they arise.

OpenSourceAutomation.com is a Windows .NET open source project. They have only just released their first beta, but it may hold promise for Windows users looking for an open source system. I would not even test it as an end user until they get a few maint releases out, but if you are looking for a long term system you can develop against, it might be the way to go.

(Yes, I am biased towards this project as the co-founder of OSA and the creater of the vCrib project that inspired it =) This project is still very young, hence my silence on here about it. I will come back and post announcements as the system is ready for public consumption, but welcome any hard core users or developers to check it out now. Next beta release is Jan 31st, but repository code is updated daily...
