HAI UPB issue

So,

My first time on these forums, and I must say I am very happy to see them. well done.

Here is the issue:

No lights at the location work. although all lights use to work great.
Started searching the HAI knowledge base and low and behold I come across the exact symptom with this article:

** I am unable to post links yet but if you search the HAI knowledge base it is article number 480

I performed the steps outlined, and everything started to work again. The problem is, of course, is that this is only a fix. It doesn't tell me what caused the problem. Has anyone else had this problem and have you come across any possible causes? I would like to be able to eliminate those causes if possible. I would like to be able to make the system as stable as possible, as the location is very remote.

Regards,

Terry Bennett

Welcome to the forum Terry!

Disconnect the HAI PIM from the panel and hook it up to you PC running Upstart and do a quick communications test to validate its function.

thanks for the quick response Pete. As noted in my post, I did get the unit and all the connected lights to function again just by performing the simple reset procedure as outlined in the HAI knowledge base article 480. what I want to know is what would cause the issue in the first place so that I can rectify that. Stability is a must due to the remote location of the installation.

Terry, which of the 3 ways outlined did you use to reset the PIM?

I have never had my PIM change from message mode to pulse mode on it's own when used with the HAI system, but this is something that I saw many years ago on early PIM's. How old is your PIM? What revision?

I would likely chalk it up to being a fluke and just wait to see if it happens again.

I performed the procedure from my touch screen to reset my pim. There are no identifiable markings on the PIM telling me what the revision is other than a model number (36a00-1) and another number on a sticker (t4007). This installation is about two years old.

We will be monitoring.

Good news there Terry!

I had a different issue with my HAI PIM. I have three UPB PIMs and leave the HAI PIM plugged into the HAI OPII panel. When I started to test status on the HAI UPB Pim a while back I noticed that I was able to send UPB commands but not receive them. Afterwards I took the PIM off of the OPII and tested it with the laptop. I noticed that Update indicated that the PIM was not communicating properly. HAI support was great. They sent me a new HAI PIM and its been working fine since. I keep one SA USB PIM as a floater to utilize with my Laptop for diagnostics. The third serial PIM is connected to the HA server such that it reponds to status or additionally UPB events. I had a real difference in signals between the two phases in the electrical panel; even with the SA Phase coupler. Sometime over the last year went to a PCS Phase coupler and my signals are much better. IE: low being between 15-20 on the opposite phase of the PIM - Now at about 20-30 on the opposite phase. I do not know the difference between the two phase couplers but do remember some original design differences in the phase couplers; but don't recall specifics.

Well, I honestly don't have a lot of experience with the PIMs. I use them for basic lighting control with an OMNI Pro II. I have about 5 different sites running PIMs with about 20 light switches per site. I really don't like how the lighting shows up on the Touchpanels. Again though, that could be my on inexperience. I have never hooked one up directly to my PC, or used UPSTART software. I don't even know what it is for or how useful it is. As far as signal levels??? I have know idea what mine are. The setups work is all I can say. lol. I have a phase coupler installed on my sites. I don't know what make or model. Apparently it works though.

Would like to used them more, but I am not a big fan of any power line care based system, due to their reliability. that being said. the HAI UPB has been the most reliable for me.

Thanks for all the insight.,

Terry
