Have your Wives read this article.

Wow. Pretty scary reading.

Not sure how this thread got in the Wiring Closet section of the board but thanks for the reading!

Not as dangerous as fabric softner but extended contact with any airborne chemical is generally not going to be good for you.

I didn't realize it was in the wiring closet, stupid me. Can it be moved?

Ummmm I wouldn't worry too much about it, this is actually the exact thread that it belongs in:

Wiring Closet: Nothing is labeled! Talk, discuss anything that doesn't fit in any of the other categories, including anything off topic.

Sorry - BAD advice. In fact, its bad advice to read 1 or 2 articles and form opinions. We are killing and seriously injuring our children and shortening our own lifespans with the toxic soup that we create and live in. I suppose that according to the hormesis theory we should not stress over then putting Thimerisol (ethyl mercury)in vaccinations is really a good thing and not really responsible for screwing up tens of thousands of children. Our bodies were simply not designed to work in a toxic environment, but yes, they are miraculous and can adapt - to a point. Your body will store/seal off toxins, eliminate them, etc as a protective measure, but don't ever buy into the fact that it is actually a good thing. Ever wonder why a seemingly healthy as a horse person suddenly falls deathly ill with cancer or similar? It's because the body will fend off the toxins, etc for a long time the best it can (depending on the state of the persons immune system) but at some point, it just can't handle the load and thats when the person breaks out in 'disease' suddenly. Want to largely eliminate cancer? Forget the billions of dollars in research, etc - just eliminate most of the toxins from our environment and hence our bodies. Thats a disease we brought on ourselves and is largely environmental.

Sure, many will say we will all die anyway, so enjoy life and not worry about it - but there is a way to balance that and still enjoy life without making stupid, often costly decisions. I agree 100% with the original article. If you want your house to smell good, use natural essential oils rather than synthetic chemicals. Every little bit of sense you use in avoiding toxins will contribute to a potentially longer and more healthful lifestyle, but unfortunately that is getting harder and harder in our society.

A common mistake made in these analysis is the idea of "high dose" vs "small dose" which is a totally bogus argument. The thing that makes toxins and other pollutants dangerous is prolonged and repeated exposure, NOT short term exposure to small or even moderate amounts. If you drink one soda containing aspertame, the tiny amount of formaldehyde it generates when it breaks down will not hurt you. If you drink 2 or 3 diet sodas per day, 7 days a week, then your chances of sustaining a negative health impact is increased dramatically. If you put on underarm deoderant every Sunday before church, you are not going to absorb enough bad stuff to hurt you. If you put it on every day for 30 years then your quality of life in your old age will almost certainly be affected.

You can do a spot check of room deoderizer, gasoline fumes, cell phone radiation, fabric softner, light pollution, etc, etc, and find no statistically significant risk. It is only when these things are studied for prolonged exposure that their true saftey can be determined. (And no, massive doses cannot be used to simulate prolonged exposure with any accuracy and neither can short lived lab animals yield any meaningful data about long term affects).

I'm not suggesting anyone should stop using modern products and go live in a cave or something but I would maintain some healthy skepticism about any chemical or radiation that claims to be safe enough for daily exposure. Make sure it has been tested over many generations. (Most soaps and incandescent light bulbs are probably safe.)
