Hi everyone!!!

Well I've been lurking around on here for a few months now, trying to soak up as much information as possible. My original plans were to build a house and just run most of the wiring I would need for sensors, networking, a/v, etc. Then slowly start adding in all the components. But with falling house prices and a recent budget increase I was able to find a nice 3 bedroom house on the lake with a walkout basement. Just needs a new well pump, water heater, filtration system, and furnace. ahh the joys of being a first time homeowner

So going from a new construction mindset to a retrofit one has left me a little confused and feeling rather overwhelmed by the whole process. But still I'm excited and eager to get started :P

So my goals are:

whole home audio, interior and exterior

some kind of centralized distributed video setup
Definately going to have a DVR setup, I like Sage and will probably go that route, but I do have a Vista box with a capture card and a couple xbox 360's laying around in various states of repair.

lighting controls (I would like to go UPB but I think thats beyond my budget for now, has Insteon's build quality improved?)

Security (thinking Elk M1)

Automation (appliance control, monitoring of various home functions)

Access Control

cameras (pretty open to suggestions, this will probably be one of my latter additions)

voip, I do have a landline and my internet connection is a bit on the slow side. Not looking to make alot of calls over the web but I'm fascinated by the idea of having different extensions throughout the house. (Anyone have any advice on using an Asterisk box?)

I'm looking at a pretty substantial network install to, I have lots of connected devices so it would be great to get everything hooked up at the same time and talking to eachother. I do a bit of computer animation and graphics work, gaming, streaming media, etc...

I'll probably start with running all the cat5 and setting up my network then start pulling wire for the sensors and order my elk.

Well I want to thank everyone for all the knowledge I've gained from this board so far, and I'm looking forward to everthing I'm going to learn as I try to make all of this come together!

Welcome to CT! You will definitely be able to find all the answers here, you just might get many different opinions :P If you want people to focus on certain parts of your 'quest', I would recommend starting a new thread about a certain topic, to avoid long and confusing replies.
