Hello,

I'm not into home automation (yet anyway) but am installing a NuVo GC system and have been doing lots of internet research learning about the system and source and control options. I've stumbled on a lot of useful info on CT so decided to join. I look forward to learning from what appears to be a very smart group of people and, in time, being able to give back and help someone else with what I learn.

hi msudawg, welcome to CT! Stick around, and don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have, no matter how crazy they might sound ;)

Thanks, I'm sure I'll come up with some good ones as I finalize this GC install! Here's one you can answer for me now though- I keep seeing reference to CQC... I gather it's something related to tying into HA equipment?? Is that right and more specifically, what is CQC and/or what does it stand for? Thanks!

CQC is Home Automation software, one of the many (but better) packages out there:

While the WIki is a little outdated, it will give you a quick overview of what kind of hardware it supports etc. I also recommend you search the forums here for CQC, there are some really good threads about it.

Finally another Huntsvillian. Welcome aboard and when you are ready for home automation check out HomeSeer.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I've always thought the idea of HA was very cool but given limited resources ($ and time), and the fact that if I opted for that sort of thing I'd insist on doing all of it myself, I've just never gotten into it.

And I have the "wife factor" limitation that seems to be a common theme in a lot of the posts I've read on this sort of stuff- gotta pick your battles. I was actually quite surprised that she was on-board with the whole-house audio stuff, particularly given the high equipment costs. But we're in the middle of a minor DIY (mostly) house renovation and she has plans for being able to host dinner parties and such when we're finished. And having music playing throughout the house fits right in with that!

Welcome!

Hopefully your wife will respect what's important to you... mine would never spend the money on some things that I have, but she understands it's important to me and goes with it. Now that it's there, she's hooked. She loves iPhone control of the house; and I knew she was sold when she would walk to the touchscreen to adjust the temperature of the house, not the thermostat... Add in selling her on anything related to energy conservation, or how something (like music) enhances quality time with the family, or provides any sort of safety - and you should be fine! Just do your best to avoid letting her see actual costs whenever possible...
