Hi all,
I'm just starting to dive into home automation. I am looking for advice on a system/protocol/software to use. To start, I am mostly interested in integrating lighting/sensor control. As money permits, I'd like to be able to easily add additional features such as multimedia control and perhaps security.
I have a couple of guidelines I want to follow:
- I don't want to rewire switches to a single command hub. I would prefer either wireless or insteon/upb or a combination.
- I want to be able to control RGB lighting (both Hue bulbs and DIY arduino-controlled RGB strips).
- I want to be able to make my own sensors/devices and enable control via the master software (e.g. enable control over my automatic pet feeder)
- I would like iOS control for at least daily tasks (lights, etc). Scripting in iOS would be nice, but if I have to program separately, that is fine
Hope that's not too specific
Since I am wanting a lot of control, my first thoughts are to incorporate Zigbee as at least part of the solution since it is open source and there seem to be ways to incorporate Zigbee into DIY projects. My problem is that I can't seem to find good software packages around Zigbee. Also, I see that some Zigbee controllers implement the "Home Automation (HA)" profile and some don't. Additionally, several new lighting technologies such as the Hue seem to be adopting the "Zigbee Light Link (ZLL)" profile and I haven't seen any support for that in my searches so far.
Again, I would appreciate all suggestions and input!
Thanks and I look forward to joining the community.
