I am able to connect to the M1XEP with a router or hub, but was trying to connect using a crossover cable I made base on these instructions:

I tested continuity and it is good. I was told that you need to use static IP to connect, but I am a little rusty on networking.

The manual talks of jumpering the static IP jumper. Is it just a matter of going into the M1XEP setup and changing to Static IP and putting a random IP in, or using default?

Thanks in advance.

Correct. You also need to change your laptop/desktop to a static IP address in the same network (i.e., the first nine digits match assuming the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0).

You don't really need to set the XEP to static IP, per se. It can remain DHCP, however you may wish to set your networking hardware to automatically set a reserved IP for the port, MAC, or however your hardware works in that case. Depends on the hardware you have.

Given that the OP has an M1XEP, a crossover cable, and a laptop, the M1XEP absolutely must have a static IP.
