home automation in australia

Hi guys, I am a newbie in Aus and realised there were much more limitation / products in aus compared to US etc... I will be watching this space and searching more for products that are reconmended.

Cheers!

Moving back to Melbourne after 10 years in Seattle. Just bought some land in a subdivision called springthorpe.

My wife's best friend's husband is a sparky down there, and does plenty of high/low voltage, but don't know if he's ever worked on cbus. I'll have to find out.

Over here in the US, you can do your own electrical work (as long as you own the house) - so I've done all the electrical work on my house over here. It's a different system here.

You get the electrical permit first, then the inspectors come over to talk with you about the work you are going to do before you do it, they come and inspect before the drywall goes up, and then they inspect again when it's all finished. The permit fee includes the cost of the inspections.
(you can't help your friends out, or touch anyone elses stuff without having a license)

I found it great - I did some extensive rewiring of my 30 year old kitchen when I gutted it and took it down to the studs, and the inspector was very helpful - especially on the trickiest part of the job where I had some aluminuum wiring that I had to join with copper.

I'm definately going to go with the Elk M1.

What do you use for blind controllers? you waiting for that new cbus blind controller to come out or are you using something that interfaces more directly with the elk?

I would have looked a cbus 3 years ago as all we had was x10. now UPB 240volt 50 hz solution is available.

The best solution by far is an ELK Ness M1 panel with Keypad.

They also have an Ethernet Serial Expander so you can talk to it with a pc touch screen.

I am not bent on CBUS or UPB as the panel can be ordered with the correct inteface to talk 2 way comms to a number of lighting solutions

The reason I like UPB is overall programming and wiring will be be far cheaper using existing power cable for comms. No separate leads to each switch.

If you insist on CBUS all you need is the CBUS controller addon for the M1. The software we have is agnostic of any standard the m1 supports.

A 17" PC driven Touchscreen will be released which will give you full alarm, camera and automation control.
It called Blaqbox! How do I know? Coz Im the programmer that is working on the Interface with a touchscreen.
It works in Tandem with an M1 and Rusound Media Server distribution if you want it to.
This product will be out before mid year.

Cheers
David

Any chance this will be shown at CES, EHX or ISC West?
