Home Automation Information

I'm trying to decide between 2 products I found for Home Automation and Security at HADepot.com - one is the HAI Omni IIe controller, and the other is the Elk M1Gold controller. The M1Gold seems to be a little cheaper, but is there some major differences in the 2 systems I should consider? I want to be able to upgrade the system in the future with things like climate control, lighting control and audio control, but for now, I just want a good security system that I can access via the internet and phones.

Thank you in advance for any support you can provide.

If you look around the forums, you'll see that this is a very Elk friendly crowd. My personal reason is that Elk maintains their own subforum here, and direct access to the mfr is a *huge* difference in my mind. It's the difference between banging your head against the wall and giving up on certain things, and banging your head against the wall and then being told what you're screwing up.

I had the same dilemma when I was shopping. I am SO GLAD I bought the ELK. I have had every issue, and question answered here. I have not had to call tech support one time. I am a hooked ELK user.

That is true. The competing HAI folks hang around another forum: http://www.worthingtondistribution.com/cgi...s/yabb2/YaBB.pl. The feel of the two are different but support is there for either product.

HAI has stated several times that they aren't interested in the DIY market, they think it's a joke, while Elk supports it big time (and has made changes / added features based on our feedback here), that alone makes a big difference for me.

I would also say the Elk is better suited to the DIY market. Its a great piece of equipment which can be integrated with a few home automation packages to enhance the setup such as Homeseer, CQC, Mainlobby and Netremote/Girder 5.

Also, I don't think the ELK is really that much cheaper if you compare equal products. When I looked into it before, the Omni Pro II came with more standard features that are available on the ELK through addon modules. So and ELK that can do everything that an Omni Pro II can would be about the same amount of money. But if you don't need all that capacity, then buying the ELK and not getting all the addons would be a cheaper solution.

Personally I've always leaned towards the ELK as well due to the DIY friendly nature of it. Heck, Spanky regularly posts on this site answering questions. I don't think you'll find that with HAI even on the Worthington site.

I almost laughed out loud after I read that one!

I don't think that is really true. I am a DIY with an HAI Omni Pro II and I have never had problems with either Worthington or HAI directly. You can call up HAI and talk to an engineer in a matter of minutes. A while back I had a problem with NextAlarm not correctly decoding the Contact ID of my HAI system, and it turned out a NextAlarm software upgrade broke things. I got NextAlarm and HAI both to talk on the phone together to get the problem resolved. Wothington is also always happy to help, and they sell anything to DIYers. Many wholesalers won't.

I'd say that Elk makes a great system, and you can't go wrong with that, especially at the lower-end. If you want, or eventually think you will want more high-end features like full-house music control with lots of connectivity to other systems, multiple video cameras, etc. an HAI system will allow it all to happen much easier. Also, after being a bit behind the curve, HAI has done a major update to their scripting language and tools, and this will be out in a month or two.

I think you will pay a bit more for HAI, but if you look at the range of products they have for their systems compared to ELK, its not even close. HAI has been doing this many years now, ELK just a few, and I'm sure ELK was a big part of getting HAI to get their products updated, which they have in a big way.

So before you buy the base system, look at the other add-on options that each have. When I first bought my panel, I just expected to have that, but one by one I added more and more features, and if I had had an ELK, I would have hit the end-of-the-road. With HAI, if you got the money, HAI has products to take it from you.

GeorgiaFan,

I'd also like to through in a big plus for the ELK and also automatedoutlet.com.

i dunno man, automatedoutlet has done some pretty big minuses on my bank account balance over the past 2.5 years.

I hate that stupid running total of all orders I've ever placed page :)

Thanks guys! The future is bright! :)

New features coming up, and some of your wishes fulfilled in the next M1 release.

The upcoming iPhone Pro will blow you away!

We have held the release of the ELKRMS software to finish adding a major new feature.

As I bite my tongue!
