Hi to everyone.
i'm looking for a device that allows me to supervise my home. It will be "at wall".
The basic requirements i need are:

- VERY LOW POWER COMSUMPTION
- VERY FAST RESPONSE TIME AFTER STAND-BY MODE (the device will be always on)
- TOUCH SCREEN
- ethernet link
- usb/serial link
- battery (as "electrical continuity" in case of black-out)
- Fully programmable OS.

Any idea or previous experience?
Kind of solution:
1- TABLET PC, something like ASUS Eee Top ET1602 or whatelse better?
2- A COMPOSED SOLUTION,
- a Network Access Server (NAS) linked with a touch screen..
- An assembled mini-pc (as the ATOM D5010) linked with a touck screen

Other solutions or suggestions? Product names?

Thank you very much. Bye

What software will you be running? The software you pick will what dictates your hardware requirements. Also, what's your budget?

I'll need to code a Gateway for supervisioning an alarm system (MyHome BTicino via OpenWebNet protocol). A Java VM need to be supported. I thoug at Win embedded, Linux or Android S.O.

Any laptop would work great. Also I have a SmartQ5 tablet which is a little chinese MID and runs android, linux, and winCE 6.0. Maybe your software can use that? It's wifi enabled and has a USB OTG port (either USB port or USB device)

I'm currently testing (playing) with mini-case (8"X8"), 12 PS (automotive style) Atom based MB for TS purposes now (connected to a 7" Mimo TS monitor).
I've been able to put the PC in suspend mod an wake it it via the TS PC. It takes about 5-8 seconds to wake up on TS Touch. Currently a couple of TS's set up to turn on monitors via IR room sensors. The case has a few means of mounting it on a wall. I am currently using a standard 100mmX100mm VESA mount in one of the vehicles. I also have modded an Asus 901A (Woot special) with larger SSD/2Gb of memory which will boot off SSD/SD/USB for dual/multiple OS boot. I've also installed an internal BT device inside of the case (very tight though). Runs decent, low power and very small (actually a bit difficult to type on). I use it for travel sometimes in that it fits in a portable CD case.

I've seen folks running HA off of these and they do a decent job. Previously played with VIA EPIA mITX MB's - small case 12VDC and they also did the job. The mini-case is tight but I was able to fit dual quiet cooling fans - but these can be subsituted for a second drive in a Raid1 array. The front of the case has a side mounted USB port (in addition to 4 on the back) which can be utilized for USB boot/BT or WLAN dongles.

My newest HA box (collecting dust right now) is a dual core mITX MB, in a small case but with a bootable CF card slot / DVD rom also with an automotive PS with the ability of running off a 12VDC battery on a charging circuit - 140W micro PS though.

Here are some pics (apologies for blur). I am not an artist

though when it comes to designing my TS's.

The touch screen is too much big/powerConsuming. I'll need a different one... Suggestions?
Aren't there models designed specifically for home automation use?

A 7" touch screen uses too much power? I'm not sure you will find any system that uses less than a 7" TS.

I have automotive style 7" and 9" TS's and they do utilize more power than this USB powered TS. Both of these utilize 12VDC small 1 AMP transformers. The USB TS uses less than 500Mw in that more would shut down the USB port.
