Hi everyone, I am brand new to HA. I have been reading your posts, and learning A Lot. Appreciate help on how controllers like ELK & HAI are different from Hometroller. Thanks.

the Elk and HAI are security panels that also do rule-based automation and other things (climate control, lighting control, camera viewing to name a few). The HomeTroller is basically a PC running the HomeSeer automation software. This is not in any way a security system, but does include rule-based automation as well as other things like voice control, voice announcements, and integration with other home control products.

The beauty of using the HomeTroller is you are not stuck using a single purpose controller. The HomeTroller can be upgraded with new plugins that are developed over time to interface with nearly every hardware device you can imagine such as security systems, cameras, serial based devices, etc. You can also use voice recognition as well as run any other software that can run on a PC. Whole house audio runs the gamit from using your own receiver and a impedance matching volume controls to PC based controls and high end audio video devices. I would recommend reading up on the various threads on the HomeSeer message board on whole house audio control. The latest "wave" is the new ESS computer control devices discussed here:
