A relay?
Sounds like you got the In-Wall On/Off Switch 2876SB and not the 2876DB In-Wall Dimmer. Look near the bottom edge where the reset button sticks out the front.
The dimmer version has a real Set of heavy power contacts [nice clear back as you said] one connected to the Black input lead and the other to a pad on the other edge of the pc board.
The relay type has a small reset button that just clicks on a small set of pads of the pc board. Relay type also has the black hot power lead and another black lead next to each other.
In my dimmer version I can see the base pc boards silkscreened pn:000-879157-101135V1 Relay type:000-879157-101160V8
