Intermittent modules disconnect from 485 data bus

This is a bit of a head scratcher. Very intermitently I will have a module disconnect from the 485 data bus.

It has no pattern as I am not getting one particular module doing it. It could be an input expander or output relay expander. It happens maybe 2 or 3 times a year. I track down the unit address that is missing pull the power to the module and re enroll in RP and the module is back on line.

The system has been up now for 18 months and has been bullet proof apart from this very intermittent dis connect issue. I have some modules enclosed in the same housing as the M1 (2 input and 2 output) and 1 input and one output located in the garage about 20 mertres away. I have these home run back to a ELK 485 data bus hub where the one and only termination of the data bus occurs. Using Cat 5e between expanders and home runs to the data bus.

The bus seems very robust which is a characteristic of RS-485. When I had my TV broadcast manufacturing company we used RS-485 in every switcher and router we made so I am very familiar in it's implimentation. So this has my head scratching. I am assuming it is an RS-485 issue as it is the only common thing to the modules.

I note that there is a data bus error function which the M1 system features (86 System Diagnostics #1) however I can find any reference as to how it expected to be used. Has anyone got some insight into this feature?

Has anyone else experienced the same as I.
