IR direct connection to back of components

Has anyone had any success with hooking the output of an IR distribution block directly to them? I know just plugging in directly does not work. I really like the idea of a direct connection as opposed to taping a blaster to the sensor of the component you want to control. Is there a circuit that can be made to allow this?

I will be doing this soon with a USB-UIRT and my Cisco-branded cable boxes from Comcast.

Here is a little bit of information regarding the wiring that can be used. Personally, I don't want to use the splitter, and will be purchasing a solder-type 1/8" male stereo adapter, and (2) 1/8" male mono adapters.
