I know there used to be an example of rules posted on Elks old website in their newsletter files of how to use the M1 as an irrigation controller. I have looked on their old website, but cannot seem to find the example of the rules. Does anyone know where I can find these rules, or is someone good with writing the rules?

Perfect, Thanks. it seems difficult to find anything on their website in regards to application notes, etc. I dont know why they didnt make it easier.
 
I setup my sprinkler rules on my Elk similarly. Some things I did that make things better.

1) Set a counter to track when you are running your sprinkler on its automatic cycle. For example if you wanted to turn a zone on becuase you just planted something or were doing some repair work, you might want to just turn the output for that zone on and off directly rather than using rules. If you turned the output off directly, it would turn the next zone on automatically without this rule in place. If you set a counter to 1 when the automatic sprinkler runs and require that the counter is 1 for the additional zone propogation, then outputs can be turned on and off directly without the zones advancing. You need to put a line into the last zone shut off that turns the counter back to 0 when the auto cycle is finished.

2) If you use custom settings instead of writing the times directly into the rules to time your zones then I find it is easier to adjust the times at future dates. The only trick is that you have to measure it in seconds, not minutes. The first time I ran that I was like.. what the heck!!!! as the zones raced through becuase I was thinking minutes.

3) I also put a zone advance task in there. The zone advance lets you push the zone to the next zone before it is done by activating this task. This is useful if you want to zip through the zones looking for malfunctioning heads or other issues. This is a series of rules that states when task zone advance is activated and x output is on, turn x output off. You right this same rule for each zone.

4) I put a "dont sprinkle tomorrow rule" in. When I know that tomorrow is a sprinkle day but I want to block it I use this rule. It says that whenever task "don't sprinkle" is activated, set don't sprikle counter to 24. Then a separate rule counts that number down to 0 one hour at a time stating that whenever every hour and don't sprinkle counter is not equal to zero, subtract one. This counts the number down to zero over 24 hours. The rule that activates the automatic sprinkler's first zone has a line that requires that counter to be zero or it won't start the sprinklers (in addition to the days of the week and time you want to sprinkle). Don't forget to put the "and counter not equal to zero" line in or it won't stop counting down at zero but rather roll over to the dafault max number and keep counting down from there.

5) Lastly, I put in to have the keypads display whenever one of the sprinkler outputs is on by stating which zone is running.
 
Here's a set of irrigation rules that give me a lot a versatility. In addition to automated watering, I added a set of maintenance tools (manual irrigate) in order to walk around the yard with a keyfob and stop/start/index the zones and control a pump relay. Also, I included a task to skip irrigation for a single day (I prefer this over approach over rain sensors). And, there are a bunch of outputs to set the watering days and I use the custom fields to control the run times and adjust them for seasonal changes using the ELK RM software.
