LG TV Remote Control

Hi gents,

I'm looking at a TV for the bathroom (keeps the WAF high).

Being the geek i am i am looking for a TV with serial control.

Interestingly enough this LG model 19LG30 specification say it has serial control (also hardwired IR input) .

http://us.lge.com/download/product/file/10..._spec_sheet.pdf

I sais RS232c-In 'Control and Service'.

Then i look up the actual manual and how great is this the protocol is fully explained and detailed.....

Here's a link to the manual:

http://us.lge.com/download/product/file/10...User_Manual.pdf

Check out page 94 where is sais 'Only 26LG30' !!!!

Also check out page 10/11 which shows not RS232 or IR in on the backpanel for the 19LG30.

Now I'm totally confused.....the spec sheet and the manual are contradicting each other...and the back panel pictures don't match.

Tried looking for a number at LG to call, but not much luck.......i'm pretty sure they good guys at Bestbuy will not be able to answer this one...

Any suggestions??

I believe LG says the serial protocol only works on 26" and larger sizes. That being said, I have a 22" Zenith model (which LG makes) and it has a serial plug which is labeled "Service and Contol" and it does allow control of the TV. So I would say if you look at the back of the TV and the serial plug is listed as "Service and Control" then the odds are very good it will work. If it is labels only as "Service Only" then don't expect it to respond to control commands.

Looking at the internet, the pictures seem to backup the idea that the serial plug is labeled as "Service and Control", but the only way to be sure is to go to a store and double check a display unit.

sic...those were my thoughts exactly....too bad the nearest place that has them in stock is 45 minutes away.... :(

It would be really sweet to control the tv via RS232.... the protocol seems well defined in the manual.....

... It would be really sweet to control the tv via RS232 ...
Controlling an LG TV via its serial port was the first driver I created for my HA system (Premise).

The protocol is well documented and easy to process because is based on a character string terminated by a carriage-return. You can create a bi-directional driver (i.e. control the TV and receive status from the TV). However, there's one glitch I encountered: when you turn off the TV it transmits a single NULL character which does not comply with the documented protocol (i.e. it is not terminated by a carriage return). Handling the single NULL character would mean creating a driver that processes all transmissions in binary-mode and that was more work than I cared to invest at the time.

What do you plan to use to control the TV?

123:

I was hoping to use CQC for this. I think somebody has a LGTV driver for it...or its in development...

I don't know how to write drivers, but just toying with serial control for the TV is probably a good excersise....

Does CQC have some sort of generic serial drive where i trigger certain commands through?

EventGhost has a generic serial plugin you can use to send whatever you like. If you need checksums calculated though you would need to do some more work.

Yeap, specfically the CQC driver is here. That is a universal LG driver that was also modified to control my Zenith model. I am controlling a 32LG30 and the Zenith 22LCD3 LCD TVs with that driver without problems.

If the TV is serial controllable, then that driver will certainly work because the driver is specifically for the LG30 series (as well as others).

As a side note, I actually contacted Zenith/LG after buying the Zenith model to get the serial protocol and after they researched my request, they came back and told me the TV was not serial controllable. However, the serial port is labeled "Service and Control" and I tried the LG driver out of desperation. It worked fine, except the polling was getting back replies it didn't expect. Mark was kind enough to modify the driver to make it work with the Zenith model. To make my long story short, you cannot always believe what the manufactures tell you.

I went to the store and looked on the back on the 19LG30 and noticed 2 things:

It DOESN'T have a IR in plug contrary to the cut sheet.

and

The serial port is labelled SERVICE ONLY.

The 26LG30 has the IR in and it's port is labelled SERVICE AND CONTROL. But it's too big for the bathroom and too expensive.

Does anybody know of a 19" TV that is serial controllable or using IR in?

I don't want to do the IR stick-on since it's ugly and since it's a bathroom (moisture and all) i don't know how well it will stay on.

If i can't find a controllable 19" then I'll still get the 19LG30 and give the CQC driver a try....who knows...can't always believe what it says in the specs/manual right?

Well I know for a fact that the Zenith 22LCD3 works <_<

We were also looking for a small TV to put in the bath, and the 22" wasn't too big. Without the stand (it is going to be wall mounted), it is 20 3/4" wide by 15 1/2" tall. Unfortunately, I think it is an older model and it's pretty tough to find. I just happened across it at BB in the open box section. I worked a deal with them and bought the 32LG30 and the Zenith at the same time.

Plasma Concepts has some in stock for about $400. I won't tell you what I paid but it was a lot less than that :(

I also started this thread on AVS Forum soliciting people's help in finding small, but serial controlled TVs. No one offered any suggestions, but you can see my findings. Basically the three smallest sets I found were the Zenith 22LCD3, the 26LG30, and a 27" Olevia 227v.

sic....

Funny thing is that the backpanel picture of the Zenith 22LCD3 and the Samsung 19LG30 are the exact same picture....but the 19LG30 doesnt look like the picture...

I ordered the Zenith 22LCD3 from plasma concepts...$400 versus the 19LG30 at $309, but the wife also gets 3 extra inches and i get control that way......arch...wow thats sounds really bad reading that back...but i'll leave it for other's entertainment... :(

ok...Zenith 22LCD3 ordered.

Now 2 new questions:

Question 1:
The control of this will eventually come from my HA server in the basement which will require a good 70-100ft of cable.

Wikepedia says the following for RS232:
The standard does not define a maximum cable length but instead defines the maximum capacitance that a compliant drive circuit must tolerate. A widely-used rule-of-thumb indicates that cables more than 50 feet (15 metres) long will have too much capacitance, unless special cables are used. By using low-capacitance cables, full speed communication can be maintained over larger distances up to about 1,000 feet.[5] For longer distances, other signal standards are better suited to maintain high speed.

What do people use for longer runs of RS232....will cat5e do the trick?

Questions 2:
I want to run the audio from this TV through the speakers in the bathroom ceiling. The TV doesnt have audio out port but does have headphone out. I thought to plug a stereo headphone plug into that and split it to 2 RCA.

The Whole House Audio amp (Nuvo Essentia) is in the basement near the HA server (so same 70-100ft or cable). What cable do i use to transport this audio signal? Can i plug the headphone out from the TV into a RCA input on the amp? Do i make 2 runs of RG6QS for this or can cat5e do the trick again? I don't plan on any RG59 anywhere...so i'd prefer not to go that route... I can run whatever is needed since it's all conduit to the TV location..
