Gang,

I'm looking for ideas. I have a basic Premise installation (lights, thermostat, dimmers, scenes etc) and am looking to add a security system to the house. I've been noodling which system toss into the mix and would very much like to use Premise vs. purchasing a seperate system (e.g. ELK) if possible. So - I'm looking for recommendations, ideas, advice, experiences etc - which would you do if you were in my shoes? My only requirement is that I need to work wireless if I hope to keep from getting kicked out by the wife....

Thanks,
Adam

Welcome to Cocoontech!

Premise currently works with several security panels including products from Ademco, HAI, CADDX, and ELK. I use an Elk M1 and the level of integration with Premise is very good. I believe another Premise user, kzboray, uses Ademco.

Most security panels support wireless sensors (via an optional transceiver device).

If you want to implement a security system without using a security panel, you should have a look at some code I wrote here that creates a rudimentary security system.

Frankly, I'd recommend investing in a proper security panel, with supervised wireless sensors, to assure maximum reliability. Plus, your home insurance company may give you a discount for having a proper alarm system (they may not if it is a home-brew system based on a PC running HA software).

The only thing I can think of is using X10 security sensors DS10A, (as long as Premise supports the extended security codes) they are wireless, and you'd need a receiver connected to your premise system I think most people use the W800RF32 from WGL & Associates

now, it is far less expensive to go this route but then you are basically depending on your computer for your security so that is something you will need to weigh yourself, how stable is premise, what about windows and your install? and backup power alarms have a battery for power outages .... ect.... not trying to sway you either way as I know other members here have done this, but these are things you need to consider

Adam, welcome to the forum!

Check out the following posts for ideas if you want to build a custom generic alarm system:

Rudimentary Alarm System, Simple burglar alarm system using any I/O board:

They should have examples and a driver for you to play with. I personally haven't gotten into building a security system yet. However, integrating a custom security system in Premise sounds like a good idea allowing you to use existing motion sensors used for lighting with code to trigger alarms etc. I use the MR26a with X10 wireless motion sensors, but it does not recognize the X10 security protocol used by the door/window sensors which are also wireless. There is a X10 receiver that would recognize the security protocols: WF800, but there is no driver for Premise so you would have to make one. I'm curious to see what others are using in the way of wireless door/window sensors also.

As you probably are aware, there is an Elk M1 Gold driver under the downloads section that 123 made found here.
