Hi,

I'm helping to roll out a new division in my company for low voltage installations for retail stores and restaurants in Manhattan. Specifically, we're looking to get into:

- Comm/Data/TV Cabling
- Security Systems/ Surveillance Cameras
- Alarm Systems (Fire)
- Card Access Systems
- Telephone Entry Systems
- Electronic Locking Devices

Does anyone know what the licensing/certification requirements are for this type of business? Also, does anyone know of any quality training schools in Manhattan that we can use to train some of our guys. No one in our company currently holds any license related to electrical work.

Thanks!

Generally, most jurisdictions require some type of on-the-job training (AKA apprenticeship), passing a state test, and proof of insurance. For the security work they also frequently require a criminal background check and bonding. Commercial fire alarms are an entire new ball of wax all by themselves.

Can't help you with the specifics for Manhattan.

In OK all you really would have to do is hire someone who holds a manager's license for each area. Then the employees really only need a trainee license up to iirc 4 assuming the manager is on site 100% of the time.

Thats the quickest way to get a green light anyway.

1 guy can hold multiple licenses and so can be the licensed company manager.

I would highly suggets you do your homework before thinking about commercial fire. Being a

Is probably the understatment of the year.

99.99% of the time you are better off sub contracting that out or making it 100% of your business. Otherwise the headaches and liability become huge. Basically no matter what happens you get sued by insurance companies with massively deep pockets.

Really I wouldn't be shocked at all if the guys who wired up the twin towers didn't get their asses sued off after 9-11. Even though there was nothing they could do about it.
