The M1 will require a CR or LF to mark the end of an incoming ASCII string.  I do not know a way to get around it.

Thanks for confirmation; I was just hoping there was a way to tell the Elk that the end of the string was the 'x', and that I wouldn't have to add additional hardware to make this happen. That said, it seems that the solution shouldn't be too difficult anyway.
