I decided to take a look at this software again (looking to build another non-MCE HTPC), and I have to say I am really impressed so far. It it as smooth as MCE when it comes to animations and other interface aspects, but the nice part is that it supports Dscaler, and even comes with a free mpeg2 decoder (so no need to buy something like Nvidia DVD decoder). The software supports plugins, is very easy to setup, and best of all free. I would definitely recommend taking a look at this if you are looking to build a low cost HTPC.

Now if they would only add support for a MediaMVP box.

Also take a look at this project. Turns any old pc into a nice lightweight media player. Boots from CD, seems to support most remotes, and samba (so you should be able to play files from your windows box).
