Microsoft/Apple Entering HA Space

There seems to be a ton of noise around the HA space with several big companies announcing potential acquisitions.

Microsoft is entering the HA space with Acquisition of R2. http://tcrn.ch/131dahQ

I read somewhere that Apple is in talks with Nest.

Where is this all leading?

R2's product worked with professionally installed equipment (Crestron), not DIY. I don't see how it is relevant for Microsoft. It's a niche market. They could integrate things into the Xbox but you still need hardware to control (Crestron is not going to take off because of this) and do you really want to control your HA system through a device that 1) serves you ads and 2) is known for the red ring of death?

I think R2 was an IP & talent acquisition.
